But if you’re willing to give it a go, there’s something oh-so-satisfying about a self-contained, one-volume fantasy epic. There’s a beginning, a middle, and an end. There’s no Game of Thrones-esque situation where you’re endlessly waiting for the next book which may or may not be over 1000 pages. The whole story is there, in one big volume, no waiting for sequels. I didn’t realize just how sequel-fatigued I’ve been until I sat down and made my way through this book. No mentally steeling myself for a cliffhanger followed by a two-year-wait. I haven’t felt this way about an epic fantasy novel since Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Who knew you can have an entire world confined to one volume! Hurray!Priory is nothing less than epic. In one book, Shannon manages to create an entire world, complete with over a thousand years of history, various conflicting religions, generations upon generations of royalty, dozens of nations, and a sea full of pirates. Pirates! There is pirate action in this book! Are you not convinced? I mean, there’s dragons - and not just one sort of dragon, either. Also, did I mention the whole book has a very, very strong feminist bent to it? How much more convincing do you need? If you like dragons, if you like epics, if you can make it through 800 pages, then you need to read Priory of the Orange Tree.

This book was so worth the 4 year wait. I remember when Samantha Shannon was talking about writing something that was not of The Bone Season world. It wasn't until she finally announced that it was a book that was going to involve dragons, forbidden magic, and romance where I was finally like I need this in my life. Now 4 years later I can finally say that Priory of the Orange Tree was everything I needed in a Epic Fantasy and more.Samantha Shannon creates such complex and rich worlds filled with influences from all over the world and it shows heavily in this book. It is something that I appreciate very much because it shows how much time she went into her research for this novel. The world of Priory is vast in scope and we get to see most of it in just this one book but even after finishing this behemoth of a book I am left wanting to explore more of it. I just want more and I hope and pray that we do.This particular story follows 4 main points of view. We follow Ead, Tane, Niclays, and Loth. We also follow some minor side characters but it's these four that really bring the story to life. It's refreshing to know that all four have their own journey and their own emotional arcs. No one copies the other. I enjoyed the reading from each of their perspectives but I do have to say I have a soft spot for Ead and Tane. Every time they hit the page I smiled. That is not to say I didn't enjoy Loth or Niclays.To wrap this up I will just say that this novel hit all my weaknesses and checked all my boxes and I just want more stories in this world. Whether it be with the same cast of characters or new ones.

Five stars for the book contents! I am not finished but so far am loving this very much.One Star because I received my copy with a broken binding. Thought about sending it back but have waited so long for it to come out I didn't want to wait to get another copy. So taped it and dug in......

Samantha Shannon masterfully constructs a fantasy world underscoring many of the same issues important today -- feminism, religion and the dangers of fanaticism, distrust of outsiders, etc. Notably, the story takes place in a sophisticated, complex political climate, where there are not simple answers to everyone working together in harmony, ringing true to the globe today. Personal identity themes are also embedded throughout -- homosexuality, religion/skepticism, and the value of friendship to name a few. It's intriguing how much of society is matriarchal, allowing Shannon to explore a world where misogyny has not abounded for centuries. The story itself is very well interwoven between many characters and lands, and I found myself completely engrossed. You might feel a little confused and overwhelmed at the beginning because there are a lot of names and places to digest, but as you keep reading it all builds, connects, and becomes interwoven.I read a lot of fantasy, and would recommend this one as worth your time.

I devoured this book in defiance of all schedules and productivity. The joy of discovering and exploring historical analogues with DRAGONS and WITCHES and LESBIANS was incandescent. Just really marvelous stuff and I was charmed through and through. Any book with a section heading "Thine is the Queendom" cannot help but be perfectly wonderful. Will be recommending all over the place!

An absolutely fantastic read. I can't even pick which my favorite narrator was! Dragons and queens and assassins and knights, and so many tropes turned on their head. Fantastic.

This high fantasy epic is one of my favorite books I've ever read, everything was incredible.From the characters to the setting to the politics to the friendships to the romance, Shannon absolutely nailed it. It took me two weeks to read but I looked forward to picking it up every single day. The world-building was so detailed and well-thought out.Plus there are dragons, which just is the icing on the perfectly written cake. If you’re a fantasy fan, this is one to definitely not miss. Even though this one is a standalone and everything was wrapped up, I‘m hoping that Samantha Shannon writes more in this world because I love it so much.*Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the publisher. What a delightful masterpiece of enlightenment and erudition! I had been seeking to collect works that contained the elements of rhetoric taught to me in high school and college speech and debate courses in order to hone my current writing and public speaking skills and was pleasantly surprised to find practically every element I sought in this one book. An added enjoyment is found in the examples from English historical and literary figures from the 17th to the 20th century. Mr. Farnsworth has done great honor to a great and honorable discipline which has been suffering from neglect in our education and public communication to our detriment.

I think this is a very necessary book; not just academic, but FULL of examples, cataloged in detail, with commentary. One reviewer harshly noted that this isn't really great for a cover-to-cover read; I agree. But, I do not think that diminishes Farnsworths accomplishments here. Just do not read it cover-to-cover; read some, savor, have some fun, set it down. Don't make a slog of it; this stuff is very enjoyable, probably best in small joyous doses.

A splendid compendium of rhetorical devices used in English composition (presumably they would work for other languages, too). Arranged well, Farnsworth uses illustrations that perfectly express the device being discussed.

For those who enjoy the aesthetic possibilities of written and spoken English, "Farnsworth's Classic English Rhetoric" must be in their library.Farnsworth's compilation of choice examples is comprehensive;it is not easily rivaled.He reviews 22 rhetorical figures ( chapter 1 reviews 3 figures; chapter 7 considers antithesis with isocolon). All 22 figures were selected for their practicality: all can be readily employed.A reviewer, Rhetorician ( July 15,2011), criticized this book for its incomprehensive treatment of rhetoric. That complaint can be dismissed. But Rhetorician is right, I think, to criticize Farnsworth's lack of specification. Farnsworth could at least have explicitly stated that he covers only rhetorical schemes; rhetorical tropes are important too and deserve treatment ( Farnsworth, in the preface, agrees; hopefully he will compile a book of tropes). The distinction would have helped those less familiar with the various aspects of rhetoric. This does not affect my rating , however.This is a great book.-----For those interested in tropes: I recommend looking at "Style and Statement" by Edward P.Corbett--though it is not as comprehensive as Farnsworth.Also worth looking at is "Power Writing,Power Speaking," an older book. The book is listed in the bibliography; it is not as comprehensive as Farnsworth either.

You know, I'm an English major, and I was NEVER treated to a course on Rhetoric. Later on, I was a law student for a short time, and there was no course on Rhetoric.Why? For centuries, Rhetoric was one of the main subjects students paid to study. Why did they pay? Because it would help them to win debates and arguments. As critics have complained for centuries, the art of Rhetoric can be (and has been) twisted into making the worse appear the better cause.But, like the two-edged sword it is, Rhetoric can make the better cause appear the only cause, and the best cause. Look to Churchill's war-time speeches, or to Lincoln's unforgettable "...that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth." You could paraphrase that, perhaps, as "the republican system of government must survive" --- and it's instantly forgettable.Rhetoric is the ancient and very effective way to make your words STICK in the minds of other people. If you're at all curious about this subject, you probably want to read this book.Or:"If there remains in you a drop of curiosity, one drop of that quest for knowledge which makes great men stand out from their fellows, if there remains in you even the slightest glimmer of interest in learning how to speak and persuade others, I suggest that the solution is evident." :-) Jazzed it up a little, didn't I?

This is the best book I have ever seen on how to craft an argument, how to write persuasively, using hundreds of examples from Chesterton to 19th century British politicians to Shakespeare. As might be expected Professor Farnsworth decomposes the types of rhetoric into categories, but avoids reader boredom by including fantastic examples. The reader who masters the concepts explained in this book will be a better writer, a better speaker - and probably a better thinker, able to understand how to persuade others with interesting, elegant prose. A must read for anyone who has to persuade others with writing (which includes a lot of potential readers).

This is a brilliant book! If you're a writer, editor, or speaker, you can benefit immensely from learning scores of rhetorical devices to express yourself more powerfully and eloquently.

Highly readable, enjoyable, and useful for writers who want to persuade or inspire. The plethora of examples are enjoyable, amusing, and illuminating.

About the Author
An authority in banking and financial history, D.N. Ghosh has been a bureaucrat, banker, professor and corporate leader. He was secretary to the government of India, and chairman, State Bank of India, and was closely associated with the evolution of banking in India for over three decades as a policy maker and as administrator.

After his retirement from State Bank of India in 1989, D.N. Ghosh held the position of chairman of Larsen & Toubro and Philips India. He is the founder-chairman of the credit rating agency ICRA and continues to be associated with several other companies as chairman or director. D.N. Ghosh was the chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow in its formative stages, besides being chairman of the Management Development Institute Gurgaon.

Since 1991, he has been managing trustee of the Sameeksha Trust, the publishers of Economic & Political Weekly. He is the author of several acclaimed books. Currently, he is president of the Society for the Preservation of Satyajit Ray Archives (Ray Society).
